IMPORT duties on ships, and fines for non-payment of duties, cannot be levied on Sri Lankan shipowners, according to the countrys Supreme Court.
Sri Lanka Customs had been trying to charge a penalty from Sri Lankan shipowners for not paying import duty and other levies. But the Supreme Court ruled, in a case involving ship owner Vallibel Lanka, that Sri Lankan flagged ships cannot be considered as imports when they enter the islands ports. "The court ruling confirms what Sri Lankan ship owners have always been saying," said Stefan Kuehl, general manager of Mercantile Shipping. Mohamed Reza of Sri Lanka Shipping added that the ruling would encourage owners to remain with the Sri Lankan flag. Its also expected that the ruling will have a bearing on a separate action filed by the Lanka Association of Ship Owners. ![]()
